Transgender Rights in South Africa - Episode 1
South Africa was the first country in the world to provide constitutional protection to LGBT people. For trans gender people specifically, their rights to gender identity and expression are explicitly acknowledged and are protected from any form of discrimination by any person or the state on the basis of their sex, gender and sexual orientation.
In this series, we talk about the rights of transgender people in South Africa, including the legal framework around South Africa’s Constitution and the Bill of Rights, amending your gender marker with the Department of Home Affairs, as well as the lived realities of of trans people on the ground.
