Gender Studies Lecture - LGBT & Transgender 101
This lecture is presented as part of Gender Studies at the University of Pretoria's Centre for Human Rights' Advanced Human Rights Courses (AHRC), and provides overview and summary of the nature of gender identity, with a special focus on the experiences of the LGBT and transgender community.
In this lecture, I'll create a safe and inclusive space where students can expand their knowledge and deepen their understanding of the issues and challenges faced by queer people. The session is interactive, thought-provoking, and engages your critical thinking to help you unpack and understand the nuances of our human experience as it pertains to our identities.
We also talk about the ways in which societal norms and structures can perpetuate discrimination, oppression, and marginalisation of the LGBT and transgender community. Hopefully, at the end of this lecture, you will have a deeper understanding of your own gender, the gender of others, and the diverse experiences and perspectives of LGBT people, and will be equipped with the knowledge and critical thinking skills necessary to challenge discrimination and promote social justice in your own life and the lives of those around you.
Whether you are interested in pursuing a career in social justice, or simply want to expand your knowledge and understanding of the world around you, this lecture will provide you with crash course on the tools and insights to be able to navigate the landscape of gender identity.
